About Me

I am an author, medical writer, editor and reviewer of books about health and medicine. I am skilled at writing, editing and proofreading articles, book reviews, brochures and reports as well as creating website content. I have edited many books and also assisted other authors to shape their non-fiction books, ready for publication.

I believe that health care narratives, including patient stories, play an important part in communicating scientific and medical concepts to a lay audience and they also facilitate communications between health professionals and/or academics.

In March 2017, I published the biography of one of world's first and leading cochlear implant surgeons, Professor Bill Gibson. Bill Gibson: pioneering bionic ear surgeon was published though NewSouth Books (one of the two publishing arms of the University of NSW). During the preparation of my book, I attended workshops in creative non-fiction writing and today I apply these principles to all of my writing from book reviews to longer-form writing.

My current and former clients and employers include: The Australian newspaper; peer-reviewed medical journals (including Pathology, published by the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia); Australian universities including the University of Sydney and Australian National University (ANU); government departments (including Ageing, Disability and Home Care, Department of Human Services NSW); not-for-profit organisations including the National Prescribing Service (NPS MedicineWise); medical device companies (including Starnberg Medical); and private hospitals including Ramsay Mental Health, a division of Ramsay Health Care.

While president of the Australasian Medical Writers Association (AMWA) from 2005 until 2009, I judged many media awards including: the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO); the Australian Dental Association (ADA); and the Luminous Award for excellence in cancer reporting. I had previously launched AMWA’s professional development program (PDP) while serving on their executive committee for ten years.
